Ernie once said to me that when he prayed, sometimes he would just say, ‘well, god, here I am, this is me,’ and rather than list pieties or ask for help to be a better person or whatever, he’d just try to own up about who and what he was. He’d come clean, he’d present himself for inspection.
I think it’s a good technique.
And I still miss him. It’s eighteen years gone and there’s still a space for him, here.
