In his hierarchy of needs, Maslow talks about the pinnacle being transcendence, preceded by self-actualisation. Both of which sound great, but which are in themselves empty states.
If you want transcendence, go for a walk.
If you want self-actualisation, try being kind.
I think what people need is challenge. Overcoming challenge, or even failing to overcome challenge, that’s where we get the fuel necessary to fulfil our needs. Transcending, self-actualising, aestheticising, all that philosophising nonsense, it’s nice work for when you’re replete, and bored.
