When I began writing, I never allowed myself to be swayed by the expectations of others. I was stymied for a while by my first agent, then I was dragged sideways by a book which was marketed as non-fiction by my second agent. I just wanted to write stories. So I took my leave of both agent and publisher. I was offered a contract by another publisher for a second non-fiction book, which I turned down.
I’ve never taken my eye off the prize, which is to write the stories in my head.
I owe it to the characters who live in those stories.
